Mental Math - Summer School

Mental math is something I have always incorporated into our regular schooling, to a degree, but I think over the summer I am going to use most of our time focusing on mastering the beginning strategies for addition and subtraction.

Miquon appealed to me (as I have mentioned before) because I do not just want them to learn the how's but more importantly the WHY's. I have seen Lucas grow leaps and bounds in number sense over the course of this year. If he was going to public school he would just be starting K this fall but he did K this year and started on 1st grade material in math. He used Miquon Orange and Math Mammoth Gr.1. We used them as a guide for learning concepts but took things at our own pace and added in things like time, math books with activities, patterns, math journal, etc.

I have introduced some of the mental math concepts to him throughout the year but now we will be getting them down. I have taken his lead as far as interest goes and right now he is asking daily for his "cards" (flash cards). This is not just for math but also for phonics. I have never been one to use flash cards for drill purposes but have used them for games and things. I did not want to be a "drill and kill" kind of mama BUT hey if that is what he wants I will take advantage of it. (cackling) Luke is loving his cards. Crazy kid!

We have been doing subitizing, (my computer does not think that is a word--huh?) counting on, doubles, making ten (complements), and commutative property of addition. Once I feel he has these mastered we will move on to making multiples of ten and front end addition.

For subtraction the subitizing will play a factor with the learning of {part+part=whole}. We will also continue to work on counting back/up, and thinking addition (again the part+part=whole).

For these lessons we will be using dot/shape cards, "cards"(flashcards), dominoes, dice, abacus, c-rods, and a few online math "games". More on the online learning to come.

As we work through these I will post my little peeps in action and how things are coming along. Sounds like a fun math summer to me :)

Blessings, Julie

  1. Sounds like a good plan for math. It's something we need to work on here, too. I really like Math Mammoth. Thanks for the ideas!

Stopping by from the Crew and following you now. Your blog is cute!

  2. Good idea.I loves maths. How interesting can we teach these kind of problems Rohan's mother is 26 years older than him. The product of their ages (in years) 3 years from now will be 360. We would like to find Rohan's present age. http://youtu.be/vXazy4somao We have series of questions like this.
