The Utter Relief of Holiness by John Eldredge ~ Giveaway and Review

Holiness... Seems like an out of reach, elite, unattainable goal for me. How about you?

Jesus is holy... I am a sinner, a wretch. Not even on the same playing field.

Thanks to New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge's new book, The Utter Relief of Holiness, I have started to dispelled that myth in my own mind. You can too!

This 187 page hardcover, jacketed book digs into God's intentions for us- wholeness and holiness, and how we can achieve that- restoration.

Take a look at this video from John Eldredge to get a sense of the down to earth realness of the message he lays out in this book.

Broken down in to two main parts, what it is (holiness) and how do we get it, it not only defines and fleshes out what holiness really looks like, but provides guidance on how we can live it. Is it easy and without sacrifice, of course not, but it is attainable even for the imperfect.

"The life God uses is a life surrendered to him. The surrender is what matters...", not perfection.

As the subtitle states, How God's Goodness Frees Us from Everything that Plagues Us, author John Eldredge shows us a biblical path to freedom and goodness, the genuine captivating goodness, which matters to God and comes only to us through Christ Jesus, using examples Jesus' life and teachings.

I really appreciated the down to earth relational writing style he uses. In order for me to actually believe that holiness is attainable for me, it has to be laid out in some pretty simple terms. There it is again, that "too elite for me" huge scary word, right? Holiness.

There is so much in this book I want to tell you about, but I honestly don't know where to start or stop. If I keep going I feel like I will only touch the surface of some topics and completely leave out others. This is not a book about "religion", rather about a "relationship". A relationship with God made possible through Christ. By Jesus' ultimate sacrifice for us, bearing the cross with him, dying to our flesh and through the Holy Spirit living inside of us, we can share his holiness. Now that is an "utter relief".

Here are a couple of quotes that I loved and would like to share with you to give you an idea of what you will find when reading The Utter Relief of Holiness.

"In fact holiness isn't even the same thing as morality. You can be a moral person and not love God. You can keep the laws and hate your neighbor. Jesus is not trying to produce Pharisees; he is trying to restore our humanity by giving us the beauty of his holiness, make us whole and holy by his love."

"Jesus...says, 'Look - it all comes down to this: Love God, love others. Practice this and you will be fine.' He's not dismissing the many wonderful instruction God has given us in his Word; he is bringing us back to the issue of motive."

Character, grace, motive, morality, doubt, love. All of these areas and more are covered in this book, all leading us to wholeness and holiness!
